About Alex Mendenall
Alex wrote and produced his debut solo EP, Here to Stay in 2013 and his follow-up, Somewhere Else to Be in 2014. Dedicating most of the rest of 2014 and 2015 to the indie-folk duo, Rachel & Alex, he co-wrote and produced 2015's, Nights Like These.
But In August of the same year, Alex returned to working on his original music full-time. He left the comfort of home and ventured South and East for his first multi-state tour. On the Somewhere Else Tour, Mendenall hit his stride, enjoying the pace, vibrancy, and diversity of the road. The 13-date sparked a fire, leading to 2016's 43-date One Track Tour. From chilly Toronto and foggy Portland, Maine, to bustling New York City and charming Chapel Hill, Alex absorbed new styles and influences. This culminated in a deeper dive into soul with his first full-length album, Into the Hinterland in 2016.
In late 2017, Mendenall went on the road again. He headed west to promote Into the Hinterland. The 27-date Into the Hinterland Tour saw Alex take his music across the Midwest, the Plains, the Rockies, and the Pacific Northwest. Upon returning, he began work on his second studio album.
Mendenall spent 14 months between April 2018 and June 2019 recording his sophomore effort. Upon writing what would become the title track, Alex departed from what was originally planned as a straightforward jazz album to create something based in jazz, but augmented with analog synths and ambient soundscapes. City of Stone was released in June 2019.
